Helping a Phys-ed tech startup overhaul design then pivot through Covid
We designed an activity dashboard to help coaches track the progress of their teams and student athletes, answering the question(s): Who worked out today? What tests were logged? What were the results? What percentage of my athletes hit their work-set goals?

Background

PLT4M is an ed-tech company specializing in K-12 physical education. They empower gym teachers and coaches with the latest in data and tools to improve outcomes in the gym and on the field. They create curriculum, interactive workouts, and tracking tools across a number of platforms and form factors.

As they found success over their 8 years in business they learned some tech debt was holding them back. They tasked our good friends over at OBLSK to rebuild and they brought us on for the UX and UI.

We designed team and individual athlete “report cards” displaying everything from heart rate data, attendance, time in the gym, and results over time. They had to look good on screen and in print.

Problem

PLT4M and OBLSK decided it was also the perfect time to fix the numerous coach, student, and content creator pain-points that had been piling up over the years. After synthesizing the feedback and poking at business goals we started by fixing simple issues using their current design system.

We worked with PLT4M to overhaul design for the web and native experiences for both coach and student athletes.

What Happened

We strategically identified and started solving problems that were at the cross-section of light development lift, but heavy on delivering user value. As we introduced fixes that could be implemented right away, we also showed them what could be achieved if they updated their design system with best practices from the Google Material guidelines and Tailwind CSS.

After 2 years now, and many wins, we’ve been asked to redesign nearly every screen-bound experience for every user type, adding many new features such as Activity Dashboard, Home feed, Leaderboards, Program Creator, and invent a system of whitelabeling the products so teams can skin the product like their school/team.

As part of the redesign, we introduced a new premium feature where schools can white label the entire experience with custom team colors and branding.
